The Lake Biwa Fireworks びわ湖大花火大会
August 8
The "festival of great fireworks." Everything you need to know is in the title. With more than 300,000 people gathering each year to watch the thousands of rockets, the hanabi of Lake Biwa are a sight to be seen. It even holds the title of largest summer fireworks show in Kyoto!
This is an opportunity to see the city of Otsu - the largest of near Lake Biwa - in a different light ... But beware, this large hanabi show is mobbed by fans: Be sure to arrive early ( at least two hours before) to get comfortable seats (especially on the busy and popular beach at Niono-hama). Don't go by car, either: the 20 km between Kyoto and Otsu can easily take three hours, but be sure to anticipate the huge crowds at Otsu Station (before and especially after the show), and don't forget your yukata!
