Karaoke in Japan: How does it work?

In Japan, karaoke is a real institution, a hobby that is practiced with friends regularly. There are bars incorporating karaoke, the most common karaoke bar is very different from what we know overseas, and comes in the form of a private room. Inside the room are benches that face the screen, you can also have drinks and snacks in addition to singing, sometimes at will depending on the bar chosen.

Karaoke chains are numerous in all major Japanese cities, but the most common and most famous are KaraokeKan, Big Echo, Shidax, Uta Hiroba or French Riviera.

Regarding pricing, you have several options: you will have the choice between paying for half an hour or requesting free time, that is to say without time restriction until the establishment closes (usually around 5am!).

Be aware that prices vary depending on the time (day or night), but also on the day of the week, Friday and Saturday being the most expensive days. Drinks must be ordered by phone from your box, individually, or by choosing the unlimited  option beforehand. The prices vary a lot according to the chains, but also the establishments.

Here are five karaoke bars where you can sing to your heart's content, from inexpensive establishments to luxurious karaoke, including the most original.
