The advertising museum アドミュージアム東京

advertising culture

The Advertising Museum, nestled within the Caretta Shiodome Shopping Complex, traces the history of advertising and marketing from the Edo period (1603-1868) to the present day. A unique place in the archipelago!

A history of advertising

The only museum of its kind in the entire archipelago, the place preserves more than 300,000 advertisements , the oldest of which date back to the Edo period. In this long history of advertising , you are led to review all the media and devices imagined by traders, artists and then advertising agencies over the centuries.

The chronological presentation gives pride of place to signs, nishiki-e prints on which ukiyo-e artists skilfully placed the names of popular businesses and products, advertisements for the traditional sugoroku board game, flyers or hikifuda , distributed cards during store inaugurations, end-of-year greetings called ebira , announcements published in the press and magazines, promotional gifts, posters, advertising films (Japanese and foreign), radio spots... This multiplicity of media and media testifies the evolution of graphics and the technologies used. Through the brands and products illustrated, it is indeed the socio-cultural dimension of advertising that is highlighted.
