Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art
The architecture at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is quite unusual, as it reflects a Japan inspired by the West in the early twentieth century, with its bronze roof and walls in pastel colors, the museum is one of the oldest of its kind. Kyoto was the cultural and political center of Japan until the Meiji Restoration (1868), when the capital moved to Tokyo (formerly Edo), and has remained a dedicated center for art and Japanese culture.
Located not far from Heian Jingu or the National Museum of Modern Art in the neighborhood of Okazaki, the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art contains carvings, wood paintings, prints and paintings of more recent artists. Temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists are also organized. A good opportunity to learn about Japanese art movements!
