Late summer storms
Different names are used across the world when talking about tropical cyclones. In the North Atlantic region, we call them hurricanes. In Asia, the term used is typhoon. In Japanese, it's pronounced taifu.
Typhoons can destroy everything in their path, so it is important to learn about them before your trip to Japan.
Typhoon season
Summer is the rainy season in Japan. From August, precipitation may be accompanied by very strong winds. When winds exceed 117 km/h, it is classified as a typhoon. These tropical storms are usually the strongest in the last week of August and early September. Typhoons cease completely from October.
Preparing for typhoon season
If you go to Japan at this time of the year, be sure to plan indoor activities if ever the rains are too heavy. Check daily weather forecasts and please do not underestimate the warnings. If a typhoon is announced, you should just stay home, do not make plans to go out during this period. Having some food stored at home can also be a wise precaution.
Safety first
Remember, Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. However, the typhoons that sweep through the archipelago from late August to late September are not to be taken lightly. If you want to spend as much time as possible outdoors for tours, it may be best to avoid visiting at this time of year.
