La ligne ferroviaire principale de la Chûô est exploitée depuis la fin du XIXe siècle au Japon. Elle part de la gare de Shinjuku et allait jusqu’à Tachikawa lors de son ouverture, puis jusqu’à Nagoya dès 1911 en passant par Shiojiri, ainsi que les Alpes japonaises. Aujourd’hui, c’est l’une des lignes légendaires du réseau JR, ayant un traffic très important vers Tokyo.
