The Kitchen Garden boutique is nestled north of Kyoto, near Notre Dame University. All the products on offer are organic and harvested in Miyama, in the rural north of the former capital. These vegetables, increasingly famous across the country, are becoming increasingly rare, even in Kyoto.
In Kitchen Garden is everything that Miyama's vegetable gardens have to offer. Red carrots, turnips, but also eggs or even natto (fermented soybeans) allow you to better understand the local flavors. Fermented soybeans, the pungent smell of which does not facilitate absorption, are very popular among Japanese people as being considered beneficial for health, and many eat them every morning with rice. In Kitchen Garden, natto is sold confined in a sort of tube formed with straw, where the soybeans finish their transformation. An important detail, as natto can be found, in mostly mass-produced, plastic containers elsewhere.
Another nice element, vegetables are sold by weight and not by the unit as is often the case in Japan. In addition, they do not all have the same size: two signs that are clear about their organic origin. Finally, for those exhausted by exploring so many green wonders, the beauty salon by reservation Garden 49 has taken up residence on the store floor.
