Arrive in Tokyo (Narita or Haneda)

Transfer to your hotel and check-in. Introductory meeting held by your tour guide.

Visit Meiji-jingu shrine and the trendy area of Harajuku. Visit the Ohta Museum, with its impressive collection of woodblock prints.

TOKYO

Night at the Metropolitan Tokyo Hotel (3*). Breakfast included.

TOKYO

Visit the traditional district of Asakusa and the famous Buddhist temple Senso-ji.

Take a short cruise on the Sumida RIver to Hamarikyu garden.

Visit Marunouchi, including Ginza and the Imperial Palace.

And Roppongi, known for its active nightlife.

TOKYO

Night at the Tokyo Metropolitan Hotel (3*). Breakfast included.

In the morning visit Ueno, with its park, zoo, and National Museum, as well as the alleys of Ameya Yokocho, a bargain hunter's paradise.

See Akihabara with its outrageous electronics and anime/manga shops.

Visit the bustling area of Shinjuku and Kabuki-cho, which comes alive at night.

A free day for you to explore the capital as you wish. Your guide would be happy to offer suggestions if needed.

Our suggestion - use the Japan Rail Pass and take the Shinkansen for a day trip to Nikko...

HAKONE

Depart by minibus for Kamakura along Tokyo Bay and the huge port of Yokohama-Kawasaki.

In Kamakura visit the shinto shrine of Tsurugaoka-Hachimangu and Kotokuin temple to see the huge bronze Buddha statue.

Take the coastal road to Mt Fuji-Hakone National Park.

HAKONE

Night at Fuji Lake Hotel (3*). Half-board.

KYOTO

Walk in Mount Fuji National Park, see Lake Ashi, the former Sekisho police station and the shinto shrine Hakone-jinja.

Take the Shinkansen to Kyoto and check-in to the hotel.

Visit Nijo castle and the old quarter of Teramachi.

Discover the main sights of Kyoto: the Buddhist temple of Ryoanji with its famous rock garden, Rokuonji temple and the famous Gold Pavillion, Kinkaku-ji.

See Gishouji temple and stroll the Philosopher's Path, lined with cherry trees.

Visit Kiyomizu-dera, a famous temple with over 1200 years of history.

Excursion and dinner in Gion's Pontocho, an area frequented by Geisha.

A day to explore Kyoto as you wish.

Our suggestion: use the Japan Rail Pass to travel by Shinkansen to Hiroshima and the sacred island of Miyajima...

NARA

Visit Nishiki market with its traditional products, then the esoteric Buddhist temple (Tendai school) of Sanjusangendo, with its 1001 statues of Kannon (Avalokiteshvara).

Excursion by shinkansen to Himeji: visit the renowned Himeji Castle

Travel to Nara, the first "official" capital of Japan.

ISE

Nara Park and its temples (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) brings together the main monuments of the former imperial capital and deer: Todaiji, jewel of T'ang art, its huge bronze Buddha and Nan-Daimon gate; Kasuga shrine and its thousands of votive lanterns; and Kofukuji Buddhist temple.

Take a scenic route to Futami, near the sacred town of Ise.

Night at Toba Hotel International (3*). Breakfast included.

SHINGU

In Futami, see the Meoto Iwa, "the wedded rocks", two sacred rocks ceremonially joined by a heavy straw rope. Visit the Pearl Museum on Mikimoto Pearl Island, in Toba.

In Ise, visit the sacred shinto shrine of Naiku, devoted to the sun goddess Amaterasu, said to be the founder of the Imperial line.

Travel along the coast to Shingu.

In Shingu, visit Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine, one of the three Kumano Sanzan (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

SHINGU

Night at Hotel Urashima (3*). Half-board.

KOYA-SAN

See the shinto shrine of Kumano Nachi Taisha, its cascade and its steep paths of pilgrimage (World Heritage site - Unesco).

Take the mountain road along the Aritagawa River to the shrines of Mount Koya (UNESCO World Heritage Site); Kichishoji temple and the rice fields of Aritanosato.

At Mount Koya, see the age-old necropolis and the funerary temple Oku-no-In, the candles there have been burning for 1200 years.

KOYA-SAN

Night at Jimyoin Buddhist temple. Half board with traditional vegetarian cuisine.

OSAKA

Visit Kongobuji, the seat of Shingon Buddhism: see Danjo-garan, the sacred space of the main temple.

Visit the Reihokan temple-museum.

Travel to Nara.

See Horyuji temple, the cradle of Japanese Buddhism, one of the oldest wooden structures in the world (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Travel to Osaka.

Dinner provided.

OSAKA

Night at Cross Hotel Osaka (3*). Breakfast provided.

MAGOME

Your morning is free to explore Osaka.

Travel to Nagoya, Japan's second largest industrial city.

Visit of the ancient shrine of Atsuta Jingu, which houses one of the three imperial regalia (like the shrine in Ise), the most sacred objects in the Shinto religion.

Continue on to Magome, a stop on the old Nakasendo road.

Lunch provided.

MAGOME

Night in a temple or ryokan (3*)

MATSUMOTO

Breakfast at the temple or ryokan.

Visit the two villages of Magome and Tsumago: the Tsuchitsumaya family museum in Magome, and the Honjin, Wakihonjin and Shiryokan in Tsumago.

Travel to Matsumoto: see the black castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Japan.

MATSUMOTO

Night at a 3* hotel. Breakfast included.

TAKAYAMA

Travel to Takayama, a village where a whole feudal district has been preserved.

On the way, visit the recontructed village Hida-no-Sato with it's Gassho-zukuri traditional houses.

In Takayama, see the temple district Teramachi and the merchant district Sannomachi; as well as the temple Kokubunji.

TAKAYAMA

Night in a ryokan or minshuku (traditional lodgings). Half board.

TAKAYAMA

See Takayama: visit the Inro Museum, the old Kusakabe house and the festive floats museum Yatai Kaikan.

The afternoon is your own to explore as you wish.

KANAZAWA

Visit the morning markets in Takayama.

Travel to Shirakawago (Ogimachi), to see the former silkworm farms. Explore the village: visit a minka in a gassho-zukuri house, as well as Myozenji, the zen temple in the village.

Continue on to Kanazawa, once the capital of one of the most powerful fiefs in Japan.

KANAZAWA

Night in a 3* hotel. Breakfast included.

KANAZAWA

Visit the city: see Omicho morning market, the geisha neighborhoods of Kazue/Higashichaya-machi, and The Museum of Contemporary Art.

In the afternoon: visit Kenrokuen Garden and the Seisonkaku Pavilion; the samurai neighborhood of Nagamachi and the former residence of the Nomura family, former governors of the fief.

KANAZAWA

Night in a 3* hotel. Breakfast included.

OSAKA

Travel to Fukui to see the Buddhist temple Eiheiji, one of the leading educational centers of zen in Japan. Visit the feudal castle of Hikone and its famous garden Genkyuen.

Continue to Osaka.

Lunch provided.

In the eveining, enjoy a farewell dinner in Osaka.
