Far away from the city life of Tokyo and traditional Kyoto, Kyushu and the southern islands of Japan remain a destination often unknowed to many travellers. Yet they offer an incredible cultural richness and many hidden treasures: remarkable historic sites, preserved natural areas of rare beauty, tropical paradises with white sandy beaches and emerald seas, and an incredible culinary tradition with roots in the island culture of the inhabitants of the Ryukyu Islands.

Arrive in Fukuoka by your own travel arrangements.

FUKUOKA

A modern and cosmopolitan city, Fukuoka is the largest economic area on the island of Kyushu. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere, completely different from the urban culture of Tokyo and eastern Japan. In the evening, stroll in the lively streets of the Nakasu and Tenjin districts, and try the local specialities from a yatai, temporary food stands that set up shop when the sun goes down.

DAZAIFU

Activate your JR Kyushu Pass, which will give you unlimited journeys on JR trains throughout Kyushu, then explore Fukuoka. In the afternoon, visit Dazaifu, located less than an hour away from Fukuoka and famous for the Dazaifu Tenmangu temple devoted to Sugawara Michizane, a 10th century scholar who become the patron saint of scholars. In the evening, walk on the sea front in the Momochi area in Fukuoka.

BEPPU

In the morning depart for Beppu. Perpetually enveloped in a cloud of steam, Beppu is a thermal resort known throughout Japan for its many onsen (volcanic hot water springs). Bathe in the springs, and try mud and hot sand baths, too. Your accommodation, equipped with a private bath, will be located in the vicinity of the countless public baths in the city, as well as tourist sites, including the famous "hells" (jigoku).

MONT ASO

Breakfast at your ryokan. In the late morning, board a train which will take you to Mount Aso, an active volcano, and the widest caldera in the world. Take a bus and then a cable-car to reach the impressive Nakadake crater. Hiking is possible, before returning to your ryokan where you can enjoy the hot baths.

KAGOSHIMA - KUMAMOTO

Breakfast at your ryokan. In the morning, go to Kumamoto by train (journey time: 1 hour and 30 minutes), passing wonderful mountainous landscapes. Stop for a few hours in Kumamoto: visit the city and its castle, with walls which are considered impregnable. In the afternoon, you can board the shinkansen, the Japanese high-speed train, to reach Kagoshima, in southern Kyushu. Located in a huge bay, Kagoshima was the fief of the Shimazu clan who ruled over Okinawa for many centuries. Influenced by the culture of the southern islands, Kagoshima showcases the cuisine of southern Kyushu. Sample the local alcohol, shochu, made from sweet potatoes.

YAKUSHIMA

Breakfast at your hotel. In the morning depart for Yakushima Island by hydrofoil (Miyanoura port). A UNESCO world heritage site because of its exceptional fauna and flora, Yakushima is a mountainous island strewn with dense forests that lends itself perfectly to hiking or bike rides. It inspired Hayao Miyazaki for his animated film "Princess Mononoke".

SAKURAJIMA

Breakfast at your ryokan. Depart in the morning for Kagoshima. Visit Kagoshima and Sakurajima volcano, which faces the city, at your leisure.

SAKURAJIMA

In the evening, return to the port, where you will board a comfortable ferry to Okinawa. An unforgettable crossing with a night spent on board.

NAHA

NAHA

Arrive in the evening in Naha, the main city of Okinawa, and transfer to your hotel. In the evening, walk around Naha city centre, where Kokusai-dori, the main thoroughfare, is considered to be the "Champs Elysées of Okinawa".

In the morning, explore Nara. In the afternoon, visit Shuri castle, its park, the Shikina-en villa and nearby sites. All sites in Naha are easily accessible by the city's monorail.

Visit the sites of the Battle of Okinawa (journey: about 1 hour by bus from Naha). In the afternoon, visit Okinawa World (less than 30 mins by bus from the sites of the Battle of Okinawa), a theme park which recreates the ambience of a traditional Okinawan village, and Gyokusendo grotto, lined with magnificent stalactites and stalagmites. At the end of day return to Naha (journey time: 1 hour by bus) where you can relax at the end of day on the beach by going for a walk or a swim.

IRIOMOTE

In the morning, transfer to Naha airport then take an internal flight to Ishigakijima (50 minute flight). Depart for the island of Iriomotejima on hydroplane (1 hour journey). Play adventurer on Iriomote island, a tropical paradise and national park, home to the only jungle in Japan and the longest coral reef in the country. You can go diving (a day of diving can be organised by your accommodation: please specify when pre-booking) or you can simply walk around this still wild island with magnificent beaches. Perhaps you will even get the chance to meet the famous wild cat of Iriomote…

ISHIGAKI

Breakfast at your hotel. In the morning depart for Ishigakijima by hydrofoil. Visit Ishigakijima, the main island of the Yaeyama archipelago, famous for its emerald sea, its white sandy beaches and its pineapples. Ishigaki offers typical island culture - its breath-taking views and its diving sites are among the best in Japan.

TAKETOMI

In the morning depart for the neighbouring island of Taketomijima. Populated by about a hundred inhabitants, Taketomijima is known for its typical Ryukyu Islands village and its beautiful beaches. There, you can ride in a cart drawn by water buffalo on its white sandy beaches. Stroll, sunbathe and relax at your leisure.
