The plum trees

Imported from China during the 8th century, plum trees are said to protect from danger. Therefore, these trees can be found in the shinto shrines at the "Kimon" or the demon gates, where the evil spirits were said to pass. The plum blossoms announces spring and is the best time for the first picnic of the year.

Like the cherry trees, many varieties of plum trees, that have been grown for centuries, can be found in the cities of Japan. Their flowers' color vary from white to dark pink.

A very popular way to eat plums in Japan is to marinate the fruit in salt in order to obtain "Umeboshi". Although the plum "Ume" itself is very sweet, the umeboshi is very salty. Another way to consume plum is to make "Umeshu" a very sweet plum wine.
