William Farre

Originally from Saint-Etienne and with a passion for foreign languages and Japanese culture, William started studying Japanese at Lyon 3 University. Upon his return from a two-year stay in Japan, he first joined the Japan Experience team Paris before moving to Kyoto to set up as a Travel Angel.

His/Her background

As part of his university studies, William spent an exchange year in the city of Matsue at Shimane University. He subsequently went back to Osaka to perfect his Japanese and to explore Kansai, a region which is highly attractive thanks to its local "Kansai-ben" dialect, its very welcoming inhabitants and the many cities which can be visited there (Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara).

His/Her advice for you

Must-see :

The famous Fushimi Inari-taisha, with its torii (traditional Shinto gates) located south-east of Kyoto station.
The izakaya (Japanese bars) for their atmosphere. You can eat there as well as having a drink.

To bring back with you :

Dashi, a broth which is often found in powder form, will be a perfect addition to your dishes.

Things to do :

Wandering through the old roads between Yasaka Jinja and Kiyomizu dera, and, of course, visiting these two temples.
Onsen, thermal springs, or even sento, public baths, provide a delightful opportunity to relax after a nice day’s visiting.

Words to Know :

"Okini" which means “thankyou” in the Kyoto dialect.

Dishes to Try :

Shojin ryori, vegetarian Buddhist cuisine which is served in many temples. Note, however, that it sometimes contains fish-based dashi.
And in a very different style, okonomiyaki, a kind of Japanese savoury pancake, which are the speciality of Kyoto’s neighbouring town, Osaka.

Traps to avoid :

In Kyoto and its surrounding area, there are express trains which stop at fewer stations and can help you to reach your destination more quickly, but make sure to double check that the train stops at the station where you want to get off.
