house Kaga

Gem of a machiya

Description

Tucked around the corner from a small buddhist temple and minutes away from the Nagamachi samurai district and Saigawa river, is Kaga House. Here, you have everything you need to enjoy a fun and relaxing time Kanazawa.

The house was traditionally transformed into a modern day machiya and has a wonderful mix of east and west. The first floor has a garden, living room, kitchen and bath area. The living room has nice tatami floors and looks out from the large windows onto the Japanese garden. On the second floor you have bedrooms that will truly help you experience a real Japan. The bedrooms are blue and red, a famous pair of colors in Kanazawa distinguishing samurais from non samurais. With western beds in one room and comfortable futons in the other, not only is the house easy to relax in, but the location is great too.

The Nagamachi samurai district, downtown Katamachi, Saigawa river, and the ninja temple are all less than a ten minute walk. Kanazawa is a relatively small city, but has a lot of nice places to see and restaurants to explore. Kaga house makes all of those very easy do. We hope to have you!

Our opinion

The same designers and construction team that built Sennichi house did this house as well and it will very be hard to say which one is better. Kaga house is a convenient, tastefully done machiya in the heart of Kanazawa.

This was excellent accommodation. I can't think of anything to complain about. The house was beautiful, in a great location (easy to walk to supermarkets/shops - and even better you walked through the old Samurai area to get there), and very well equipped. The house is a traditional Japanese style, with modern kitchen and very modern bathroom. Everything was well thought out amenities wise and we have everything we needed for our stay with our kids. Chris and his staff took excellent care of us, providing advice and meeting us for check-in and showing us around the house. They also booked us a taxi for our departure. The only thing I will say is be careful with young kids, little hands can go through paper screens - it made us a little nervous, but we had no problem. Also the stairs are very steep (think ladder-like) this would be an issue for anyone with mobility issues and young kids too. Overall I highly recommend this place. It was the best rental we stayed at in Japan.

This was a very carefully set up traditional house which has been very nicely renovated - it was perfect for us and our two children. The area is a quiet local street, with friendly neighbours who we met but still very close to good dining and site seeing spots in Kanazawa. Communication was excellent - Chris and his colleague Alissa were very attentive and made sure we found our way to the house easily, checked us in and gave great tips on good restaurants and places to go. Chris even came to see us off when we were leaving, booked a taxi and made sure the driver knew where we were heading. All up, one of our best rental experiences to date!

We had an amazing time in Kanazawa. Chris was a great host and the place was very clean and comfortable. The location made it a great home base for exploring the sights - close to the samurai district and tons of restaurants & bars. Definitely recommend!

We found the house and neighbourhood very traditional. Located very close to the Samuria District and easily within walking distance to all the traditional attractions. Food is not an issue with both supermarkets and an amazing variety of restaurants.. If you really want to find the real Kanazawa then this provides the opportunity. I would recommend a minimum of 3 nights to really enjoy Kanazawa. Finally we can't recommend Chris our host highly enough. The hour he spent with us helped us enoumously and really showed his passion for Kanazawa and Japan. Thanks Chris we will definitely be back!

We had a great stay at Kanazawa house. The place was great, very cute and ideally located. Chris was the perfect host and gave us very good tips to start our visits. We stayed 2 nights and could have easily spent one more night.

Really, really great experience. The house was perfectly-sized for a couple, and would be fine for a party of 4 or kids. Nice kitchen and beds. Great location near the river and the running paths, and plenty close to all the touristy Kanazawa stuff. The host (Chris) was truly exceptional: a model for hosts as far as I am concerned. He sat with us for 30 mins, patiently explaining the features of the house then annotating a map with great places to eat in town. He even got us a reservation at a 6-seat 'Japanese only' kappo sushi place, and then rode down on his bike to walk us to it when we were unable to find it! Amazing. Will return!

Kaga House was a perfect option to explore Kanazawa! The house is fantastically renovated and impeccably clean and the location was super convenient with the Samurai District just about a block away and lots of shops, restaurants and downtown close by. Chris went above and beyond with welcoming us to the house and explaining how everything worked to ensure our comfort. He also provided lots of "insider" suggestions of where to go and places to eat which were all very helpful. A great choice!
