Despite the word "International" in its official name, Itami no longer handles scheduled international passenger flights. Instead, it serves as one of Japan's busiest domestic airports, offering frequent connections to destinations across the country, including Tokyo, Sapporo, Fukuoka, Okinawa, Sendai, Kagoshima, and many others.

For travelers already in Japan, Itami Airport is often the most convenient way to reach Osaka. Its location is significantly closer to the city center than Kansai International Airport (KIX), resulting in shorter travel times and easier transfers. Whether you're beginning a Kansai itinerary or continuing to another part of Japan, Itami provides a fast, efficient, and easy-to-navigate travel experience.

A brief history of Osaka Itami Airport

Osaka Itami Airport opened in 1939 and originally served military aviation before transitioning to civilian use after World War II. During Japan's postwar economic boom, it became one of the country's busiest airports and served as western Japan's primary gateway for both domestic and international flights.

As air travel continued to grow, the airport's location within a densely populated urban area led to increasing concerns about aircraft noise and limited opportunities for expansion. 

Terminals and airlines

Osaka Itami Airport has one connected passenger terminal divided into North, Central, and South sections. Although each area primarily serves different airlines, the entire terminal is connected by indoor walkways, allowing passengers to move between sections in just a few minutes.

The Osaka Monorail is the airport's only rail connection and links Osaka Airport Station directly with several major transfer stations. From there, passengers can continue to destinations throughout Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe.

• Hotarugaike Station, where you can transfer to the Hankyu Takarazuka Line for Umeda and Takarazuka.
• Senri-Chuo Station, where you can transfer to the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line for Shin-Osaka, Umeda, Namba, and Tennoji.
• Kadoma-shi Station, where you can transfer to the Keihan Main Line for eastern Osaka and Kyoto.
• Minami-Ibaraki Station, where you can transfer to the Hankyu Kyoto Line for Kyoto and Osaka.
• Bampaku-kinen-koen Station, which provides access to Expo '70 Commemorative Park and nearby attractions.

Although the monorail requires a transfer to reach central Osaka, it is often one of the fastest and most reliable transportation options during busy travel periods.

Airport limousine buses

Airport limousine buses provide direct service from Itami Airport to many of Kansai's most popular destinations without requiring train transfers. They are especially convenient for travelers with large luggage or those staying near major hotels.

Typical travel times are approximately 30 minutes to Umeda, 35 to 45 minutes to Namba, and around one hour to Kyoto, depending on traffic conditions.
