Like Yamanashi Prefecture in June 2016, Shizuoka Prefecture opened its Mount Fuji World Heritage Center in December 2017 . The inclusion of Mount Fuji as a sacred place and a source of artistic inspiration on the Unesco World Heritage List in 2013 effectively obliged the prefectures concerned to set up a dedicated cultural center working "in the field of protection, conservation and enhancement of the cultural and natural heritage and to encourage scientific research in this field” (Article 5 of the World Heritage Convention).
Installed in Fujinomiya because of the wealth of the city's heritage linked to Mount Fuji, this brand new establishment aims to protect, preserve and pass on to future generations the environment, history and culture of the site.

The poetry of places
The construction of the museum was entrusted to the architect Shigeru Ban . The latter, internationally recognized for his paper and cardboard structures and his humanitarian commitments, has created here a set of three buildings as an invitation to contemplation.
The central building, whose unique inverted cone shape is covered with a wooden latticework, is a true architectural marvel . This cone representing Mount Fuji and its reflection in the waters of the basin echo the sacred mountain visible on the horizon which is also reflected in the basin.

From the resonance of these two figures and their water doubles results a grandiose staging . As at the entrance to Shinto shrines , the entrance to the place is marked by an imposing red torii ; a deliberate desire to mark the sacred character of the volcano and the link with the Fujisan Hongu Sengen-taisha to which the summit of Mount Fuji belongs from the 8th station. Shigeru Ban, using materials from the prefecture of Shizuoka such as hinoki (Japanese cypress) for the covering of the cone, ends up anchoring his building in the territory.

By following the 193 meter long, gently sloping spiral course inside the cone, you experience a virtual ascent. The progression is accompanied by video projections of the landscapes of Mount Fuji on all the walls for a complete immersion.
