1. Fumotoppara Campground (Shizuoka)
This is undoubtedly Japan’s most iconic campground! Famous for its vast meadow, which offers an unobstructed view of Mount Fuji, Fumotoppara attracts photographers who gather there at sunrise.
The campground is also an excellent base for exploring the Shiraito Falls and the Asagiri Plateau—known for its farms and outdoor activities (such as paragliding)—as well as the many trails around the Five Lakes. RVs and vans can also park here.

2. Koan Camping Ground (Lake Motosu)
Located on the shores of Lake Motosu, this campground is known for offering the same panoramic view featured on the 1,000-yen bill. Its crystal-clear waters are perfect for kayaking and swimming in the summer, while its location allows you to explore the Five Lakes region, from the Aokigahara Forest to the ice caves formed by ancient lava flows from Mount Fuji.

3. Hottarakashi Camping Ground (Yamanashi)
Perched high in the mountains of Yamanashi, this campground offers one of the most beautiful views of Mount Fuji, especially at sunrise. Its main attraction is its proximity to the famous Hottarakashi Onsen, where you can enjoy a bath with a view of the mountain. The region is also renowned for its vineyards, wineries producing Koshu wines, peaches, and the Fuefukigawa Natural Park.

5. Retreat Camp Mahoroba (Lake Kawaguchi)
With its terraced campsites facing Mount Fuji, Retreat Camp Mahoroba is one of the most photogenic campgrounds in the Five Lakes region. It's the ideal destination for first-time campers, as the campground offers everything from tents to glamping accommodations and comfortable cabins. From the campground, you can easily reach Lake Kawaguchi, Chureito Pagoda, and the Mount Tenjo cable car.

8. Fun Space Ashinoko Camp Mura (Hakone)
Located on the shores of Lake Ashi, this campground is ideal for combining nature, relaxation, and outdoor excursions. From your campsite, you can take a cruise on the lake, admire the floating torii gate at Hakone-jinja Shrine, or head to the volcanic valley of Owakudani before ending the day at one of the region’s many onsen. Note that cabins are available for rent.

9. Higashikagura Forest Park Auto Camping (Hokkaido)
Located about 15 kilometers from Asahikawa, this campground is often ranked among the best in Japan for the quality of its facilities. Very well maintained, it offers spacious grassy campsites, bungalows, communal kitchens, and a wide range of amenities for families.
Its main attraction is its location: it's an excellent base for exploring Daisetsuzan National Park, Japan’s largest. Asahiyama Zoo,the famous blue ponds of Biei, and the flower fields in Furano are also within an hour’s drive.
