The New Yamanote Line Station

The JR Yamanote Line is the most convenient way to travel Tokyo with your Japan Rail Pass. Learn about their new, upcoming station : Takanawa Gateway.

Where is Takanawa Gateway station ?

The station is located between Tamachi and Shinagawa Stations, which had a long stretch of 2 km between them with no stops.

The station will also connect with the JR Keihin-Tohoku line and also provide access to the monorail that goes to Haneda Airport.

How is the station ?

The designs for the new station are impressive to say the least. With the Tokyo Olympics Games in mind, the four-story station include a public area with a fountain and a large screen for future viewing of sporting events that summer.

The new station is designed by Kengo Kuma and the platforms are the first floor and concourse, gates and exits are on the second floors.

Shops are on the second and third floors.

Eki Naka are being revamped all over the country to become central hubs for events, shopping, and more, so naturally this is a priority for the new station in Tokyo.

The roof is designed to give the impression that it is made of a huge piece of paper and will look like an origami.

To be continued...

The station was inaugurated on March 14th 2020 but the shopping and event center that will accompany it will not be finalized and open to the public until 2024.

The surrounding area are also being completely renovated with the prospect in mind to be a maglev terminal station
