What is the Osaka World Expo 2025?

From April 13 to October 13, 2025, Osaka is hosting the prestigious World Expo, located on Yumeshima Island, under the theme:

“Designing the Society of the Future and Imagining Our Life of Tomorrow.”

Being selected by the Bureau International des Expositions in 2018, Osaka is now welcoming millions of visitors to explore cutting-edge innovations, global cultural experiences, and advanced technologies. This is Japan’s second World Expo, after Osaka’s memorable event in 1970.

Expect three sub-themes, each explored through dedicated pavilions:

  • Saving Lives: Health, well-being, and solutions to global challenges
  • Empowering Lives: Innovation, AI ethics, and urban mobility
  • Connecting Lives: Sustainability and intercultural exchang

What to expect?

The Osaka World Expo 2025 will take place on Yumeshima, a man-made island in Osaka Bay, covering approximately 155 hectares.

The master plan, designed by renowned architect Sou Fujimoto, features a striking circular layout centered around the Grand Ring—a massive ring-shaped wooden structure that is set to become one of the largest of its kind in the world. This architectural feat combines modern construction techniques with traditional Japanese nuki joinery, often seen in historic shrine and temple carpentry.

Visitors will be able to explore the Expo both at ground level and from elevated walkways atop the Grand Ring, offering panoramic views of the event grounds and surrounding bay.

The Expo will host three main categories of pavilions:

  • International Pavilions: Representing around 150 countries and international organizations, showcasing diverse global visions for the future.
  • Corporate Pavilions: Led by Japanese companies, NPOs, and research institutions presenting advanced technologies and social innovations.
  • Signature Pavilions: Curated by leading Japanese creators—including artists, designers, and scientists—exploring key themes in imaginative and provocative ways.

The overarching theme of Expo 2025 is “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”, with a strong emphasis on addressing global challenges such as climate change, plastic waste, and marine conservation. Visitors can expect immersive experiences highlighting innovations in sustainable energy (including solar, wind, and algae-based solutions), AI, mobility, and smart city development—offering a glimpse into how humanity might live more harmoniously with the planet in the years to come.

Cutting-Edge Architecture and Immersive Design

Expo 2025 Osaka will showcase spectacular pavilion designs and immersive experiences that push the boundaries of visual storytelling and architectural innovation. Visitors can expect a blend of cultural expression and technological creativity brought to life through bold, futuristic structures.

Architecture enthusiasts will be especially delighted by the works of globally acclaimed architects, including Shigeru Ban (designer of the Blue Ocean Dome), Kengo Kuma (responsible for the Portugal and Qatar pavilions), as well as firms such as Coldefy & Carlo Ratti Associati, Mario Cucinella Architects, and Manuel Herz Architects, among others.

The Japan Pavilion is also a must-see. Its striking circular wooden structure—built using traditional Japanese joinery techniques—symbolizes the cyclical nature of life and highlights the country’s deep cultural and ecological sensibilities.

Even if you don’t secure reservations for pavilion or prefer to avoid long queues, simply walking through the Expo is a rewarding experience in itself. You can admire the stunning architecture from around the world while sampling diverse international cuisine at food courts and pavilions throughout the site.

How to book and plan your visit

  1. Choose your visit date. (Please note that to complete the booking, you must choose a date, but you will be asked to choose a date again, when you register on the official website, and it doesn't have to be the same one).
  2. Buy your ticket on this page.
  3. Shortly afterwards, you'll be emailed a code that will be your ticket ID.
  4. Go to the official Osaka World Expo website and create an account.
  5. Use your ticket number to register the day and time of your visit. (Please use our user guide if you need help with the procedure).
  6. Register for lotteries if you wish to visit specific pavilions that require advance reservations.

Book a date in advance: The window to reserve your date on the official website will open 6 months before your planned visit. Booking early is highly recommended, as certain popular days may quickly fill up due to limited capacity.

※ On our website, you are asked to choose a date and time of entry, but this is for information only. We cannot guarantee that the time chosen with us will be available on the Osaka World Expo site. If the time and date you require are already fully booked on the Osaka World Expo side, please choose another time and date.

Additional Information

The lottery system exists to ensure smooth management of the crowd, but winning at lotteries is not the only way to visit pavilions.

  • Many pavilions and attractions are open-access.
  • Some have a hybrid system (booking in advance and queuing if you don't have a reservation).
  • You can make last-minute reservations using your QR codes at the terminals located inside the exhibition site, or from the Osaka Expo application (we strongly recommend downlaoding it) depending on available slots.

Payment methods:

The Expo site will be fully cashless. You can use the same payment methods (Credit Cards, Electronic Money, 2D Code Payments) that you use in your daily life. Visitors without cashless payment methods will need to purchase a prepaid card in advance or could download MYAKU-PE, but a Japanese phone number is required.

Meals:

The pavilion restaurants offer great food from around the world. But if you prefer to save time for visiting the pavilions, we recommend bringing your own snacks or going to the food court next to the West Gate.

Cancellation Policy:

Non-refundable and non-exchangeable

※ However, please note that once you have registered your desired date and time on the official website, you can change it up to 3 times.

※ Things to know before booking

Try to visit outside of major Japanese holidays, such as Golden Week (late April to early May), or Obon (Mid -August) to avoid large crowds.

We recommend you to arrive around noon or in the afternoon, to provide a quieter, more relaxed experience, as the majority of school groups are visiting in the morning.

Due to the global scale of the Expo, nearby hotels and lodging may fill up quickly. If possible, book your accommodation early.
