  • Create and care for your own bonsai: Go beyond shaping by learning how to repot your tree and apply moss, an essential step in bonsai cultivation.

Available language: English, French

Activity type: Cultural workshop

Duration: Approx. 2h

Meeting point: Bonsai house in Omiya Bonsai Village

What is Bonsai?

Bonsai is the Japanese practice of cultivating miniature trees that evoke the essence of natural landscapes within a confined form. Far beyond horticulture, it is a disciplined art shaped by time, care, and a deep sensitivity to the rhythms of nature. Every gesture—whether pruning, wiring, or positioning—seeks to create harmony between form, growth, and expression.

Through this experience, you will approach bonsai not only as an artistic practice, but as a way of life. Set within a traditional bonsai house and garden in Omiya, the experience offers insight into how this craft is nurtured and passed on in its original context—where daily practice, environment, and cultural heritage come together in a continuous process of transmission.

Why choose the Bonsai Workshop in Omiya?

For decades, Omiya Bonsai Village has been at the center of bonsai culture in Japan, home to generations of professional growers who have dedicated their lives to this art. Unlike urban workshops, this experience takes place in a setting where bonsai is not only displayed, but lived—within private gardens and working spaces that reflect a long-standing tradition..

This activity offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in this environment, guided by a specialist and surrounded by a wide diversity of bonsai. In addition to learning pruning and shaping techniques, you will also discover the importance of repotting and moss application—key elements in maintaining the health and aesthetic of a bonsai. The experience naturally extends beyond the workshop itself, as you are free to explore the surrounding village, visit other nurseries, and deepen your understanding of bonsai culture at your own pace.

What happens during the activity?

  1. Meet your bonsai expert and receive an introduction to bonsai principles
  2. Visit the bonsai garden and observe a wide variety of trees in different stages of development
  3. Learn essential techniques for pruning and shaping
  4. Create your own bonsai under expert guidance
  5. Repot your bonsai and apply moss to complete its composition
  6. Free time to explore the surrounding bonsai village before or after the workshop

※ Please note: the bonsai created during the workshop cannot be taken home due to customs regulations.
