What is Miya-Daiku?

Miya-daiku are traditional Japanese carpenters who build and restore sacred wooden structures such as shrines and temples. Their expertise lies in kigumi—a sophisticated joinery technique that interlocks wooden parts with no nails or screws. This method requires years of dedication to master, as it relies on deep knowledge of wood’s natural behavior and meticulous precision.

Beyond technique, Miya-daiku work is steeped in spiritual meaning. Their role connects deeply with Japan’s religious heritage, and every structure they touch becomes a living embodiment of ritual, resilience, and beauty.

The Hanbara Legacy

The Hanbara Miya-daiku, based in the Aikawa area near Tokyo, are among the most trusted temple carpenters in Japan. Known for restoring sites such as Edo Castle, the group is now committed to sharing their legacy with a wider audience—not through performance, but through genuine craft transmission.

This experience is more than a cultural tour—it’s a rare chance to enter the world of Miya-daiku as a hands-on trainee (shugyōsha). Under the guidance of actual carpenters, you will train like an apprentice and learn techniques passed down through generations.
