The journey between Tazawako and Akita is made aboard the Komachi Shinkansen, which uses the Akita Shinkansen line. This line is a unique feature of the Japanese rail network, classified as a "Mini-Shinkansen." Unlike classic Shinkansen lines built specifically for high-speed travel, the Akita Shinkansen line utilizes conventional tracks with an enlarged gauge, adapted to allow Shinkansen trains to operate. This engineering offers travelers the opportunity to pass through more intimate landscapes and rural areas that would be inaccessible to traditional Shinkansen, thereby providing a different perspective on the Akita region.
