Ticket - Train - Yamagata - Tendo

The train journey between Tendo and Yamagata is quick. With a local train, the duration is generally approximately 15 to 20 minutes. If you opt for a limited express train (like the Yamagata Shinkansen), the journey can be slightly shorter, around 10 to 12 minutes. We remind you of the exemplary punctuality of Japanese trains.

We recommend using the JR railway network. The Ou Main Line (奥羽本線) directly connects Tendo and Yamagata stations. You have the choice between local trains (普通, futsū) or limited express trains (which include the Yamagata Shinkansen, although it runs on the same tracks as the Ou Main Line at this section). Both options are reliable and punctual.

The cost of a standard ticket for a local train journey between Tendo and Yamagata is 240 yen. For limited express trains, an additional fee is applied on top of this basic fare, corresponding to the limited express price. For this short distance, using a local train is often the most practical and economical option.

In Tendo, several activities are centered around shogi and other aspects of local culture:

Shogi Culture: Visit workshops where shogi pieces are handcrafted. Many shops offer these, sometimes unique, pieces. Tendo Park (Maizuru Park) houses a monument dedicated to shogi and offers city views.
Onsen (Hot Springs): Tendo is also renowned for its hot springs, with several ryokan (traditional inns) offering relaxing baths.
Fruit Tasting: The Yamagata region is famous for its fruits, particularly cherries and pears. Depending on the season, fruit picking is a popular activity.
