Shimenawa, the Sacred Rope of Japan

Shimenawa are sacred ropes made of rice straw, used in Shinto culture to mark purified spaces and invite divine blessings. They symbolize the boundary between the sacred and the ordinary, expressing gratitude for nature and prayers for prosperity and protection. The Ise-style shimenawa, with its distinctive twisted form and white paper streamers, is deeply rooted in Japan’s cultural heritage and continues to decorate homes and shrines throughout the country.

Why Shimenawa in Ise?

Ise is home to the Ise Grand Shrine, the spiritual heart of Japan and a place where ancient traditions are still alive. For over 80 years, the artisans of Ise Miyachū have crafted ritual implements for the shrine, preserving the craftsmanship and spirit of “Tokowaka” — the ever-renewing balance between tradition and innovation. Making your own shimenawa here is more than a craft lesson: it is a way to touch the living essence of Japanese spirituality and the deep respect for nature at the core of its culture.
