Goryokaku Fort stands out with its five-pointed star shape, a rare military architectural design in Japan, inspired by Western fortifications. Built towards the end of the Edo period to defend the region against potential foreign threats, it was the site of the last major battle of the Boshin War in 1869. This conflict saw the last forces loyal to the Shogunate oppose the new Imperial Government, marking the end of the samurai era and the beginning of Japan's modernization. Today, it is a popular public park, especially during the cherry blossom season, and offers a view of its unique geometry from the Goryokaku Observation Tower.
