The line between Murayama and Yamagata is part of what is known as the 'Mini-Shinkansen'. Unlike conventional Shinkansen lines that operate on dedicated tracks, the Yamagata Shinkansen uses conventional tracks that have been adapted (widened gauge) to allow high-speed trains to pass. This unique feature enables Tsubasa trains to offer a direct connection from Tokyo station to Yamagata, and then Shinjo, without transfer, even though the speed on these sections is slightly lower than on main Shinkansen lines.
