The line between Murayama and Yamagata is part of what is known as the 'Mini-Shinkansen'. Unlike conventional Shinkansen lines that operate on dedicated tracks, the Yamagata Shinkansen uses conventional tracks that have been adapted (widened gauge) to allow high-speed trains to pass.
