The Yamagata Shinkansen line, used by Tsubasa trains heading to Murayama, is an example of what is known as a 'mini-shinkansen.' Unlike conventional Shinkansen lines that use entirely dedicated and separate tracks, the Yamagata Shinkansen was created by converting an existing narrow-gauge railway line into a standard-gauge track, thereby allowing Shinkansen trains to operate on it. This enabled the Shinkansen network to be integrated directly into regional cities like Murayama, preventing passengers from having to transfer to a local service after disembarking from a standard Shinkansen. This technical adaptation provides a direct and smoother connection for travelers heading to Yamagata Prefecture.
