In Praise of Shadows
A writer of duality, the novelist Junichiro Tanizaki (1886-1965), in 1933 published a brilliant essay on Japanese aesthetics, revealing the play on light and shade, "slightly veiled, deep reflections" of the habitats of the Archipelago.
