Kansai International Airport (KIX) is an engineering marvel, built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay. Kansai Airport Station, where the Haruka train departs, is integrated directly beneath the terminal building. The Limited Express Haruka was inaugurated in 1994, concurrently with the airport itself, specifically to connect KIX to major cities in the Kansai region. Its route takes it across Osaka Bay, occasionally offering views of the water, before diving into the urban network, including its recent stop at the new Osaka Station (Umekita Area) before reaching Shin-Osaka, the gateway for Shinkansen bullet trains to Western Japan.
