Japan Experience offers the JRP Care option, to be added at the same time as your Japan Rail Pass order.

What the option covers

• A 100% refund of the Japan Rail Pass if you cancel, instead of the 15% cancellation fee charged without the option.
• A free name change on your exchange order, whereas reshipping costs remain payable by you without the option.
• Telephone assistance in Japan, seven days a week from 8am to 10pm, in French and English, for the entire validity period of your pass. Unlimited calls, at the cost of a local call. The number is given in your confirmation email.

What the assistance can do for you

Guide you through a large station, keep you informed when services are disrupted, check a train time when you have no internet access, answer your questions about using your pass or about the price of a ticket with a private railway company, and act as an intermediary if you are struggling to make yourself understood by a JR member of staff.

What the option does not cover

• No refund once the exchange order has been exchanged for the Japan Rail Pass, or if you have already travelled with it.
• The option cannot be added afterwards: it must be taken out when you order your pass.
• This is not a JR service. JRP Care is provided by Japan Experience and is not affiliated with Japan Railways.

A standard one-way ticket for a non-reserved seat (自由席, jiyūseki) costs approximately 4,960 JPY. For a reserved seat in ordinary class (指定席, shiteiseki), the price generally ranges between 5,490 JPY and 5,790 JPY, depending on the season and the specific train. Green Car (first class) options are also available for superior comfort, at a higher fare. We recommend purchasing tickets at JR ticket offices (Midori no Madoguchi) in major stations, via automatic ticket machines, or through JR's online reservation platforms.

Upon arrival at Kagoshima-Chuo Station, several sites are easily accessible. We suggest the following activities:
SakurajimWe recommend taking the ferry from the port terminal, located near the station, to visit the active volcanic island of Sakurajima. Bus tours are available on the island.
Sengan-en Garden: This traditional Japanese garden offers views of Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay, as well as an insight into local history. It is accessible by bus from the station.
Shiroyama Park: An observatory at the top of this park provides panoramic views of the city, the bay, and Sakurajima volcano. Access can be made by bus or on foot.
Local Cuisine: We recommend savoring local specialties, such as Kurobuta pork (Kagoshima black pork) or the Shirokuma dessert (shaved ice topped with various ingredients).

Yes, the Shinkansen journey between Kumamoto and Kagoshima is covered by the various JR Kyushu Rail Passes. The 'Northern Kyushu Area Pass', 'Southern Kyushu Area Pass', and 'All Kyushu Area Pass' all include this route. Travelers with a JR Kyushu Pass can reserve seats (指定席) for the 'Sakura' and 'Mizuho' services free of charge. We recommend booking seats in advance, especially during peak travel periods, at JR station ticket offices.
