What is a private Japanese tea ceremony?

More than a simple tasting, this personalized experience invites you to discover the art of cha no yu in a peaceful, exclusive setting. You’ll be welcomed in a traditional tea room, where the master adapts the ceremony to your pace and curiosity, explaining each movement and its symbolism.

The influence of Sen no Rikyu

In the 16th century, Sen no Rikyu shaped the spirit and aesthetics of cha no yu, highlighting simplicity and imperfect beauty. This private ceremony honors his legacy by creating a direct, personal exchange between host and guest, true to the Japanese tea schools’ traditions.

How does a private tea ceremony unfold in Kyoto?

Your host warmly welcomes you before presenting the essential utensils: chasen, chashaku, chawan, and natsume. The sound of water heating in the kama signals the start of the ritual. You’ll have the chance to interact with the master, ask questions, and savor the matcha tea with a traditional wagashi, in a serene and exclusive atmosphere.

What tea is used for this experience?

Matcha, a premium powdered green tea, is whisked before you with a chasen in a traditional bowl. Each gesture follows a precise code, ensuring the perfect texture, foam, and temperature for a refined, balanced tasting experience.

Etiquette for a private tea ceremony

In this private, serene environment, respect and discretion are essential. Please:

  • Avoid wearing perfume
  • Choose modest clothing and clean socks
  • Observe the master’s gestures and follow instructions
  • Hold the bowl with both hands, turn it before drinking
  • Thank the host humbly

Each action contributes to the harmony of this sacred ritual.
