In Japan, you’ll notice pink markings on some platforms or signs that say“Women Only Car.” These cars, reserved for women at certain times of the day, may come as a surprise to foreign travelers. How do you use them? What should you do if you get on one by mistake? Japan Experience explains everything.
Are women-only train cars available throughout Japan?
Women-only carriages (女性専用車,josei sen'yōsha) were introduced by several railway companies in the early 2000s to combat harassment on public transportation, particularly non-consensual touching.
This practice is most common on heavily crowded trains during rush hour in major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, and Fukuoka.
Several companies offer this service, including JR East on certain lines, Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Osaka Metro, Hankyu, Hanshin, Keio, and Odakyu.
However, regional trains are rarely affected, and the Shinkansen do not have cars reserved for women.
How can you tell which train cars are reserved for women?
The cars reserved for women are easily identifiable.
On the platforms, floor markings indicate the location of the designated car. Signs, usually pink or purple, display the text女性専用車, along with its English translation,“Women Only Car.”
Both on board and at the station, informational posters also list the times during which the restriction is in effect.

Who can use these railcars?
When the reservation is active, the carriages are reserved for female passengers.
Rules may vary by airline, but some men may also be allowed on board:
- accompanied children (girls and boys);
- people with disabilities accompanied by a caregiver;
- certain accompanying persons, depending on the network’s specific conditions.
Men are not permitted to ride in these cars during reserved seating periods. However, outside of the specified times, these same cars are once again accessible to all passengers.

What are their operating hours?
Contrary to popular belief, women-only carriages are not in service all the time.
They are most often reserved during the morning rush hour, when trains are particularly crowded. Some rail companies also extend this policy into the evening or apply it at different times depending on the line.
Before boarding, it’s therefore advisable to check the signs posted on the platform or on the train doors.

What happens if there's a mistake?
Tourists can easily board a women-only car without realizing it, especially on their first trip to Japan.
In most cases, there is no penalty. If a man accidentally boards a women-only car during the designated hours, staff or other passengers will simply ask him to switch cars at the next station.
Since the signage is clearly visible, a few moments of attention are all it takes to avoid this kind of situation.
