Ticket - Train - Kyoto - Nara

For a day trip to Nara from Kyoto, the train is the most convenient and efficient mode of transport. We recommend using the JR Nara Line. Rapid trains (Rapid or Miyakoji Rapid) offer a direct and shorter journey. It is also possible to use the Kintetsu line, but this often requires a train change at Yamato-Saidaiji if you depart from Kyoto Station, and its departure point in Kyoto is not the main JR Kyoto Station concourse. The JR line is generally preferred for its simplicity and its coverage by the Japan Rail Pass.

At Kyoto Station, you will find JR Nara Line trains on platforms 8, 9, and 10. The station is large but well-signposted. Follow the signs indicating "JR Nara Line" or "Nara". We recommend checking the information screens on the platforms to confirm the next departure and the type of train (Local, Rapid, or Miyakoji Rapid), with the latter being the fastest.

The cost of a train ticket between Kyoto Station and Nara Station via the JR Nara Line is approximately 720 yen for a one-way ticket. This fare is valid for Local, Rapid, and Miyakoji Rapid trains, as it is a basic fare with no express surcharge on this line. If you possess a Japan Rail Pass, the journey is included and requires no additional payment.

The train journey from Kyoto to Nara takes approximately 45 to 50 minutes on a rapid train (Miyakoji Rapid) and about 70 to 75 minutes on a local train. Regarding the duration of the visit in Nara itself, we advise allowing at least a full half-day, meaning about 4 to 5 hours on-site, to explore the main sites such as Nara Park, Todai-ji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. For a more in-depth exploration, including other temples or museums, a full day can be considered.
