Shin-Osaka Station, inaugurated in 1964, was specifically designed as the western terminus of the Tokaido Shinkansen, the world's first high-speed rail line. Unlike Osaka Station (Umeda), which is a historic station and the heart of the local network, Shin-Osaka was built to integrate the Shinkansen into Japan's railway system. It was a major engineering project aimed at separating high-speed traffic from conventional lines, thus facilitating efficient transfers between Shinkansen and local trains.
