teamLab Borderless—Azabudai Hills, Tokyo
teamLab Borderless was originally opened in 2018 on the man-made island of Odaiba. In 2022, upon the completion of the Azabudai Hills complex, the exhibition was moved to the basement of the facility.
Per its name, teamLab Borderless is meant to be navigated without a set route and without overt guidance. Guests are encouraged to explore the indoor exhibit and find different installations, some of which are easier to locate than others! In this spirit, the exhibition’s slogan is “Wander, Explore, and Discover!”
Beautifully combining digital art, dynamic lighting fixtures, and other, more unorthodox mediums, Borderless is home to some of the world’s most standout art installations. Some of note include the following:
- “Borderless World”: The interlacing maze with interactive projections on the wall that serve as the basis for the exhibit grounds.
- “Infinite Crystal World”: One of the most iconic installations that consists of LED node chains hanging from the ceiling in a room filled with mirror panels.
- “Light Sculpture”: A hallway of moving LED lights provides a dynamic display of swiveling spotlights and smoke.

teamLab Planets – Shin-Toyosu, Tokyo
The sister exhibit to Borderless, Planets, also by teamLab, opened in 2018, about a month after Borderless. Originally opening in Odaiba, it was upscaled and then moved to Shin-Toyosu, being one of the main attractions for the area. In typical teamLab form, the installations are interactive, engaging almost all the senses, but Planets is the more “hands-on” experience between the two.
teamLab Planets has a strong emphasis on natural elements, with sections dubbed “Water,” “Garden,” “Forest,” and “Open-Air,” strongly influenced by the prevalence of geography and environment in Japan’s traditional cultures.
At Planets, the experience is meticulously designed for visitors to actively participate in the installations that are both artistically and technologically impressive! A few of the most well-known installations are as follows:
- “Athletics Forest”: A perplexing sensory experience is created when visitors engage with moving surfaces and illuminated structures.
- “Future Park”: Draw an animal, an object, or a scene, then observe how it instantly blends into the virtual world. The artwork of each visitor blends with others to create a dynamic, collective space.
- “Soft Black Hole”: Visitors' perspective and balance are shifted by the soft, shaky surfaces they walk on in this area.

teamLab Biovortex Kyoto - Minami-ku, Kyoto
The newest permanent exhibition from teamLab in Japan opened in Kyoto on October 7th, 2025. It is located in Minami-ku, only 7 minutes away from Kyoto Station, making it an easily accessible attraction in Japan’s ancient capital.
Along with being the newest teamLab in Japan, it is the largest in the country, covering more than 10,000 meters of space. Throughout the grounds, staple forms of teamLab installations, such as projections of intricate calligraphy and colorful flowers, as well as the use of unique mediums and dynamic lighting.
What sets this exhibition apart is its more “conceptual” or “abstract” approach to its installations, with amorphous sculptures and forms that reshape themselves within enclosed environments. A few installations are reinterpretations of other teamLab staples, but several of them are unique to Kyoto Biorvortex, including the following:
- “The Way of Birds”: A room with a starkly black backdrop with colorful imagery of flying birds flying over cascading floral motifs.
- “The Morphing Continuum”: Together, luminous spheres form a figure that almost seems sentient, constantly changing, providing a deep sensory experience.
- “The Traces of Life”: Visitors leave glowing imprints with every step that eventually fade, demonstrating the transient nature of our acts and the interconnectedness of people.
