France is especially appreciated by the Japanese in three areas of excellence: luxury, wine, and pastries. The best way to entertain is therefore to choose a gift in one of these three favorite areas.
Safe bets
1. Textile articles: a designer tie for a man, or a scarf for a woman.
2. The wine: a standard bottle of Bordeaux or Burgundy wine.
3. Pastries: calissons and macaroons symbolize good taste, luxury, and French refinement. A safe bet, especially if the recipient of the gift is a woman.
4. Cosmetics and perfumes: the Japanese are very fond of French beauty products and in particular perfumes from major French brands, but beware of strong smells that many will not dare to wear!
