The Limited Express Azusa mainly runs from Shinjuku station, although a few services start or end at Tokyo station. Shinjuku is the usual terminus for journeys from destinations such as Matsumoto or Kami-Suwa.

How long does the train journey from Kami-Suwa to Tokyo take?

Allow 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. The Azusa connects Kami-Suwa to Shinjuku in 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes without transfers, but it does not go directly to Tokyo Station: add 15 minutes via the Chuo Rapid Line.

Is seat reservation required on the Azusa?

Yes, seat reservation is mandatory to travel on the Azusa. Since March 2023, all Limited Express Azusa trains are fully reserved, with no non-reserved cars. You must therefore have a ticket that includes an assigned seat.

Is the Kami-Suwa - Tokyo journey included in the Japan Rail Pass?

Yes, the route is entirely JR. The Limited Express Azusa connects Kami-Suwa to Shinjuku in 2h10 to 2h20; add 15 minutes via the Chuo Rapid Line for Tokyo Station. The Kaiji, however, does not go beyond Kofu.
