The Akita Shinkansen line, used by the Komachi train between Tokyo and Akita, is a unique example of a 'mini-Shinkansen' in Japan. Unlike conventional standard-gauge Shinkansen lines, the Akita line was converted from an existing conventional railway line. This allows the Komachi train to run directly on this line without requiring a transfer, albeit at a slightly reduced speed on this section. Additionally, the Komachi (E6 series) has the particularity of often being coupled with the Hayabusa Shinkansen (E5 series) between Tokyo Station and Morioka. Passengers can observe the uncoupling maneuver in Morioka, where the two trains separate before the Komachi continues its journey to Akita.
