Brown Hawk Owl Ninox scutulata アオバズク
A pair of Brown Hawk Owls (Ninox scutulata) regularly nest in the grounds of Nagoya Zoo in Higashiyama Koen in the north east of the city.
The birds draw a stream of visitors peering up into the trees to spot the well-camouflaged birds. Brown Hawk Owls can be found in an area from the Middle East stretching through South and South East Asia to China and Japan, where the birds often breed before moving to warmer climes in the winter. Brown Hawk Owls are nocturnal and feed on small birds, insects, frogs, lizards and mice. They nest in tree hollows.
