Most of Japan's shinkansen normally have a green class and a standard class, but in recent years, newer models of train have introduced a new class for the ultimate bullet train travel: the Gran Class.
Riding in Gran Class
The interior of a Shinkansen Gran Class car is designed to feel more like an upscale lounge or airline first class than a traditional train. Seats are arranged in a spacious 2+1 layout, upholstered in premium materials with wide armrests, deep recline, leg rests, and smooth electric controls that allow passengers to fine-tune their position for maximum comfort.
Soft, subdued lighting and refined color palettes create a calm, intimate atmosphere, while thoughtful details—such as large tray tables, personal reading lights, and generous luggage space—emphasize privacy and ease. The overall effect is quietly luxurious rather than flashy, offering a serene, carefully crafted environment that elevates long-distance rail travel into a genuinely special experience.
At the moment, most (not all) Hayabusa trains on the Tohoku/Hokkaido Shinkansen and Kagayaki trains on the Hokuriku Shinkansen offer complimentary food for the Gran Class. The meal is either Japanese or Western style and comes with a drink as well. Other trains will have menus for passengers to look at to order food and refreshments.
Gran Class vs Green Car vs Ordinary Car
- Gran Class: The most luxurious option, Gran Class cars are laid out in an exclusive 2+1 configuration with large, fully reclining seats, premium upholstery, personal power outlets, and an airline first-class feel. On select services, attentive onboard staff provide complimentary food and drinks, creating a refined, lounge-like experience that turns the journey itself into a highlight.
- Green Car: A step up in comfort, Green Cars feature wider seats in a 2+2 layout, more legroom, quieter cabins, and a calmer overall atmosphere. The seats recline further, footrests are standard, and the space feels noticeably less crowded—making it a popular choice for longer journeys or travelers who want extra comfort without going all-out.
- Regular Seats (Ordinary Class): Arranged in a standard 3+2 layout, these seats are clean, reliable, and comfortable by global standards, with decent legroom and simple recline. They’re ideal for most travelers and offer excellent value, but amenities are minimal and the experience is very much about efficient transport rather than indulgence.
