house Genmachi House
A 1920 TAISHO ERA TOWNHOUSE
Description
Genmachi house has been meticulously restored to its former glory while being fitted with the most modern amenities, the townhouse is one fine remaining example of the particular Taisho era architecture of the 1920's.
The house is complemented by two beautiful Japanese gardens, both recently renovated by an award-winning Kyoto gardener.
The ground floor offers a luminous and spacious open-space living area from where you can enjoy the gardens.
The sleeping quarters are on the second floor and are reached through a typical Japanese corridor, much of which was kept in its original condition.

Our opinion
The Taisho period was a time where Japanese style was greatly influenced by western culture in various fields as the country embraced various foreign influences.
Japan looked toward Europe as a source of inspirations and in the field of architecture, elements of western style and traditional japanese designs were harmoniously combined. Genmachi house has two rooms with this particular “ryokan” style.
When renovating the house, the owner was able to preserve most of its original features and visitors can very much feel like stepping back in times when entering the premises.
Although fully functional for a modern lifestyle with IH stoves, a dish washer, a fridge and a freezer, much of the kitchen was kept in its original condition. It represents a typical example of a "kyomachiya daitokoro" (Kyoto townhouse kitchen) with its sunken passageway, a well and an antique "tansu" (Japanese traditional cabinetry) for you to enjoy.
