house Hida

Comfort at the foot of the Japanese Alps

Description

Hida House is a large machiya style house located right next to Takayama city’s Old Town. Resembling a Japanese style mountain lodge, the house is a mix of east and west, and only a 10 minute walk to the station and a 5 minute walk the main sights in Takayama city.

On the first floor, there is a large living room with tatami floors and a “horigotatsu,” a traditional Japanese style table where you sit on the floor, but your feet fall freely beneath you. Past the bath and restroom is a western style kitchen looking out onto a private garden. Along with a small deck to enjoy the garden under the open sky, the kitchen allows for easy cooking and is great for couples or large groups.

On the second floor, there are three bedrooms with a mix of western style beds and futons. The master bedroom is very spacious, while the other two rooms offer privacy for the other members of your party. There is a small balcony looking out to a shrine behind the house, perfect for enjoying a cup of tea or sipping some famous Takayama sake.

Hida House is under construction until March 2017, with pictures to follow.

Our opinion

The interior of the house has very nice wooden beams and ceilings, fitting in a city famous for its woodwork. Large, comfortable, and relaxing, Hida House will be a great place to explore Takayama, Shirakawago and the surrounding areas.

Great location in a quiet neighbourhood near the old town, with most things of interest in easy walking distance. There are two especially good restaurants nearby - one for ramen, one for beef. The house is comfortable and convenient, a blend of traditional Japanese machiya and some western style amenities. Gwenn was very helpful and his comprehensive recommendations for the town were all great.

Merci

The house was lovely. In a quiet neighborhood just a few minutes walk from the historic district. Three bedrooms were great, the kitchen was great and the entire experience was fantastic. Gwenn met us there and was incredibly helpful. Highly recommended for anyone going to Takayama.

We were a group of 5 staying at Hida House. The house worked perfectly for us! The bathroom was on the bottom floor while all the bedrooms were upstairs. This wasn't a major issue for us, but could be for those with young children or people who have difficulty negotiating stairs. Coffee and tea were stocked in the kitchen. The bath had plenty of towels, soaps, hair dryer and was sparkling clean. Gwenn met us on the walk from the train station and guided us to the house. He speaks perfect English (among other languages) and instructed us in the use of all the equipment in the house and gave us loads of useful tips for what to do and where to eat. The old section of Takayama is very walkable from the house. We only took the bus to the Hida Folk Village which was fun for all of us - including our teenagers! Gwenn: Thanks so much for the warm welcome on our arrival to Takayama and all the helpful tips of what to do. We actually ran out of time and wished we could have stayed at least a day longer. We made it through much of the list you provided and definitely had a wonderful dinner at The Bull. My husband (who loves steak) said that was the best he has ever had. I really can't think of anything you could have done to make our stay more enjoyable! Thank you again!
