How long does the train journey from Fukui to Tokyo take?

Allow 2h55 to 3h20. The Hokuriku Shinkansen connects Fukui to Tokyo without transfers since the March 2024 extension: the Kagayaki provides the fastest connections, while the Hakutaka makes more stops.

Is the Fukui – Tokyo route included in the Japan Rail Pass?

Yes, entirely. The Hokuriku Shinkansen is operated by JR East and JR West, both covered by the pass, without any surcharge or private sections. As the Kagayaki requires mandatory seat reservation, we advise you to reserve your seat at the ticket counter before departure.

Is there a direct Shinkansen between Fukui and Tokyo?

Yes. Since the Hokuriku Shinkansen was extended to Tsuruga in March 2024, Kagayaki and Hakutaka services call at Fukui and run through to Tokyo with no change, in 2 hours 55 to 3 hours 20. The Kagayaki is fully reserved, so a seat reservation is compulsory.

Which is better: the Hokuriku Shinkansen or via Maibara?

The Hokuriku Shinkansen. It connects Fukui to Tokyo directly in 2 hours 55 minutes to 3 hours 20 minutes. The route via Maibara requires taking the Limited Express Shirasagi and then transferring to the Tokaido Shinkansen, and is no longer advantageous in terms of travel time since the extension in March 2024.
