A calendar set a little early
On January 8, 2026, the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) unveiled its second cherry blossom forecast. This forecast shows the dates of first bloom and full bloom for somei yoshino, the most common variety of sakura in the archipelago.
Based on meteorological data from last autumn, the calendar was published earlier than usual. Using artificial intelligence, the agency is said to have fine-tuned its predictions to enable travellers to plan their spring getaways in the best possible way.
Early cherry blossoms
In Tokyo, cherry trees are expected to blossom as early as March 20, with full bloom expected around March 27, a few days earlier than last year.
