The best vantage points for contemplating the sun around Mount Fuji
While the summit of Mount Fuji remains the best place to watch the sunrise and sunset in the region, there are several viewpoints where you can enjoy a magical moment around Japan's highest mountain.
1. Lake Kawaguchi
Located north of Mount Fuji, Lake Kawaguchi is one of five lakes bordering the mountain. It's an emblematic place in the region, as much for its panoramic views as for the leisure activities it offers (water games, walks on the water, etc.). The ideal time to enjoy it? at sunrise, when the calm waters reflect Fuji.

3. Lake Tanuki
Lake Tanuki, located on the Asagiri plateau, is a man-made lake renowned for its enchanting reflections. In the early morning, when the mist clears, you can see Fuji reflected on the water, along with the surrounding forest.

Today, its summit is a prime location for admiring the sunset, when the light envelops the valley and Fuji.

5. The tea fields of Imamiya
Located in Shizuoka prefecture the tea fields of Imamiya offer a spectacular contrast between the rows of tea and Mount Fuji.
Cultivated for centuries, the plantations are prized at sunset, when the light creates shadows on the silhouette of Mount Fuji.

How do you plan your ascent to admire the sun from Mount Fuji?
Want to get as close as possible to the sun? At 3,776 meters above sea level, Mount Fuji offers an exceptional panoramic view of the Japanese sunrise and sunset.
The official climbing season generally runs from early July to mid-September. To make the most of these magical moments, here are a few tips:
To admire the sunrise
- Start your ascent in the afternoon from the 5th station.
- Climb to the 8th station and rest in a refuge until around 3am.
- Resume your ascent to reach the summit before sunrise (between 4:30 and 5:30 depending on the season).
To watch the sunset
- Leave from the 5th station in the late morning.
- Aim to reach the summit about 1 hour before sunset (between 6 and 7 pm depending on the season).
- Plan to come back down at night or sleep in a refuge at the summit.
Caution: It's crucial to reserve your place in a hut in advance, especially if you're planning a night ascent. Also avoid weekends and Japanese vacation periods to minimize crowds on the trails.
