Kyoto Station is one of Japan's busiest railway hubs, welcoming millions of travelers each year. Whether you're arriving before hotel check-in, exploring Kyoto on your final day, or making a day trip to nearby destinations like Nara or Uji, coin lockers provide a convenient way to store your luggage while you explore.
Hundreds of coin lockers are located throughout Kyoto Station, with additional baggage storage and luggage delivery services available for oversized suitcases or when lockers are full.
Where to find coin lockers
Coin lockers are located at the following locations within Kyoto Station:
- Central Exit
- Karasuma Exit (North Side)
- Hachijo Exit (South Side)
- Shinkansen ticket gates
- Underground passages
- Near major station entrances and shopping areas
Because lockers are spread across multiple floors and entrances, it's often worth checking another area if your first choice is full.

Most lockers are easy to use, even for first-time visitors.
- Choose an available locker.
- Place your luggage inside.
- Pay using coins, IC cards, or credit cards, depending on the locker.
- Keep your key or digital receipt until you return.
- Retrieve your luggage before the station's collection deadline.
Many of Kyoto Station's newer lockers feature multilingual touchscreens and support cashless payment methods.
What if the lockers are full?
During peak travel seasons, weekends, and holidays, coin lockers can fill up quickly—particularly the larger ones.
If no lockers are available, several alternatives are located within or near Kyoto Station.

Many hotels also partner with Kuroneko Yamato's TA-Q-BIN (Takkyubin) service, allowing travelers to send luggage between hotels, airports, and private residences throughout Japan. This is an excellent option if you're traveling between cities or want to avoid carrying large suitcases on crowded trains. Depending on the destination, luggage is often delivered the next day, while same-day delivery may be available for select local routes.
TA-Q-BIN services can be arranged at participating hotels, convenience stores, Kuroneko Yamato service counters, and select luggage delivery desks at Kyoto Station. Prices vary depending on the size of your luggage and the delivery destination.
Using a luggage delivery service allows you to begin sightseeing immediately without returning to collect your bags later, making it one of the most convenient ways to travel around Kyoto and Japan.
Tips for using coin lockers
- Arrive early, especially during cherry blossom season, autumn foliage season, and major holidays.
- Carry an IC card, as many lockers accept ICOCA, Suica, PASMO, and other nationwide IC cards.
- Choose the exit closest to your next destination before storing your luggage to save time later.
- Consider luggage delivery if you're traveling with multiple large suitcases.
- Take a photo of your locker location, as Kyoto Station is large and can be confusing to navigate.
Can you leave luggage overnight?
Yes. Many coin lockers allow overnight storage, although an additional daily charge applies for each extra day. Lockers left unused beyond the permitted storage period may be emptied by station staff, with luggage transferred to the station's storage office for later collection. Policies vary slightly depending on the locker operator.
