house Kyoka-an

A machiya in the heart of Kyoto

Kyoka-an, built during the Taisho period (1912-1926) nearly 100 years ago, is a Kyoto-style machiya house available for rent, located 7 minutes from the intersection of Shijo-Karasuma, in the center of the former imperial capital.

Our opinion

Ideal accomodation for people wishing to experience a stay at a traditional Japanese house with the ability to explore Kyoto from its center.

Within walking distance to Kawaramachi, Gion, Ponto-cho, and other popular sightseeing locations.
Located in a quiet alley amongst other historic terraced houses.

Very nicely renovated traditional machiya on a quiet side street in an extremely convenient location for buses, subway and nearby Nishiki market, Teramachi, and Shijo shopping areas. Small beautiful garden in the back to provide air and some light.

This accommodation is in a perfect position for everything in Kyoto. Short distance (30-minute walk) from Kyoto station, 5 min walk to Nishiki markets, close to Gion. Very comfortable beds 2 x western-style beds 2 x Japanese style beds in the second room, there is no lounge just Japanese style chairs on the ground which was a treat for my family. We visited during the Gion festival which is 3 nights of celebrations culminating in a parade on the 17 July, I would suggest this as a great time to visit. There are food stalls lining the streets and 1000's of people relaxing and hanging out in the streets it was amazing. Thank you to Aurore for her warm welcome our family had a great time in Kyoto.

The machiya was fantastic for our family of four. The house itself was interesting, authentic and beautiful with its woodwork, tatami floors, rock garden and futons. The hospitality was special with the information in the house (maps), touches (basic cooking supplies) and Aurore's communication. The location was central to Kyoto as well as subways and buses. Our family thoroughly enjoyed staying here.

Notre famille a vraiment apprécié notre séjour ici.
