house Tsukinowacho

A former workshop in the heart of Gion district

Located in the heart of a lively and charming neighborhood, and just a short walk from the Yasaka pagoda and the street of the same name, Tsukinowacho House underwent an important renovation in the first half of 2017 that transformed an old workshop into a new residence while seismically retrofitting the structure. The renovation was carried out in the “Wa Modern” style (wa = Japanese) characterized by rigor and austerity as well as the use of wood and indirect lighting, both natural and artificial. You will also find some classic elements of traditional Kyoto architecture. On the façade, the roof and eaves observe the rules of alignment with the street, the vertical wood lattices (koshi) let light enter but prevent those outside from seeing in, and one of the upstairs windows evokes the “insect-cage windows” (mushiko mado) - all typical elements of the traditional machiya-style house. Nor should we forget the small Shouki statue that benevolently offers you its protection. On the inside as well, the wood beams of the framework have been restored to increase volume, small skylights reminiscent of the “windows on the sky” (tenmado) stud the dining room ceiling, and a miniature garden (tsubo niwa) composed of stones and dragon’s beard (ryu no hige) extends an invitation to tranquility.

Located on a quiet lane, it’s walking distance from the famous Kiyomizu temple and the shopping streets of Ninen zaka and Sannen zaka to the east. To the west, you only have to cross Higashi Oji and you’ll be just minutes away from Gion Geisha disctrict. Buses will whisk you quickly and easily to the great boulevards of Sanjo, Shijo, or Kawaramachi, as well as to Kyoto’s major cultural sites.

Nice organization in terms of the reception in the house. Being received by a person who speaks our language is still very welcome. He gives us all the explanations and advice on the house, the neighborhood and the city. He remains in contact with us throughout the stay. We were reassured to know that in case of a problem we could ask our Travel Angel for advice. Thanks to Daisuke and to Japan Experience. In addition, your team is very reactive in email exchanges.

Herzlichen Dank.

The house is 2min from the main road, where u can find supermarket, food & lots of kimono rental shops. The bus stop is literally around the corner, main tourist attractions can easily be reached by foot within 15 min stroll.
My kids love the house, tatami is very comfy. I like how organise and strategic the rooms are. Love that the kitchen is fully equip. Can't ask for me, wish i had a longer stay.

Tsukinowacho, does this name have any meaning? Not enough progress in Japanese to know it but we will translate it by "adorable house", restored with a perfect taste and ideally located!
Ideal for those few days to discover Kyoto. We will recommend to our good friends.
Many thanks

Mille mercis
