Kansai Thru Pass

  • Economic and simple
  • Unlimited travel

Did you know that private lines that are NOT covered by the Japan Rail Pass account for 80% of Kansai's transportation?

The Kansai Thru Pass offers unlimited access to local transportation (all regional, non-JR trains, subways and city buses in Kyoto and Osaka) allowing for unhindered exploration throughout the Kansai region of Japan, which includes popular cities like Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, and the Himeji area and also includes access to and from Kansai Airport.

  • This Kyoto Nara Osaka 3-Day Transport Pass is known as the "Kansai Thru Pass".
  • The Kansai Thru Pass will no longer be available starting from May 31, 2024. Do not purchase this pass if you plan to travel on or after that date. No refunds will be accepted for reasons such as having purchased by mistake without checking the expiration date.

Why buy Kyoto-Nara-Osaka Transportation pass?

  • 3 days unlimited rides in Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Koyasan, and more!
  • Valid for all regional trains (excluding JR LInes), subways, and buses
  • No need to wait in line for individual tickets.
  • Use immediately (No need to exchange vouchers!)

Where can I use my Kansai Thru Pass?

  •  Travel everywhere within the Kansai Region!

The "Kansai Thru Pass", can be used on most of railways of Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe, Koyasan, and Himeji areas including Kansai airport.

How do I buy/use my Kansai Thru Pass?

  • Purchase and delivery

Delivery to your home before leaving for Japan.

Delivery within 5 working days.

If you would like delivery to your hotel in Japan, this is possible on request by e-mail (contact@japan-experience.com). It is necessary to have your hotel reservation number and to be sure that your stay will take place within the next few days; to avoid any refusal of receipt by the hotel reception.

You can also buy and collect your Kansai Thru Pass directly from one of our branches (Paris, Madrid, London and Berlin), without booking it online first.

The Kansai Thru Pass will no longer be issued starting from May 31, 2024. Do not purchase if you plan to travel after that date. No refunds will be accepted for reasons such as having purchased by mistake without checking the expiration date.

  • Conditions of purchase / cancellation

Japanese residents are not eligible to purchase this pass.

There is a Kansai Thru Pass for children from 6 to 11 years old but Japan Experience does not sell it. The only alternative is to buy an adult Kansai Thru Pass for your children.

Once sent to the address you provided when you purchased it, if you decide not to use it, you can return it to us. We will refund 85% of the purchase price. Shipping costs cannot be refunded.

  • Terms of use

The Kansai Thru Pass can be used directly at the entrance gates of trains, subways or buses. No need to redeem a voucher/coupon beforehand.

The Kansai Thru Pass is undated and after the first postmark is valid for 3 days, consecutive or not. Each time the pass is cancelled for the first time, the same day is counted as used (1 day, not 24 hours).

Once the pass is used up, it cannot be reloaded like the Suica card. Therefore, for more than three days, you must purchase two or more passes and use them consecutively. You can buy up to 3 passes for one person.

The pass cannot be used on JR lines. Kansai Area Pass and Kansai Wide Area Pass would be more appropriate, even though JR lines do not form the majority of the rail lines in this region.

On Nankai and Kintetsu limited express trains and Keihan premium coaches, a surcharge must be paid on the train. On the other hand, there is no extra charge for Limited Express trains of other companies (Hankyu, Keihan...)

For trips to Koya San, the Kansai Thru Pass is more convenient than the Koya San World Heritage Pass. We explain you why in the "FAQ" section

For travel between Osaka and Kansai Airport (KIX), please refer to the same "FAQ" section below.

Please insert your pass into the ticket slot of the automatic ticket gate at the boarding station. When the gate opens, proceed and remember to take out your pass as it comes out.

You will need to do the same at the drop-off station. Your pass will be returned to you, so don't forget to take it out.

You can chose your 3days until the expiration date.

The dates of use do not have to be consecutive.

For example, in the case of a 3days pass, if your validity period is from 2023/01/01 to 2023/01/31.

You can use three consecutive days like 01/12,13,14 or non-consecutive days like 01/12,15,20.

The Kansai Thru Pass offers the bearer various reductions on admission to various museums in the Kansai area as well as other perks.

There are small reductions (around 100 yen) on entry to such places as Osaka Castle, Osaka Science Museum, Spaworld, the National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka Prefectural Flower Garden, Itsuo Art Museum, Osaka Museum of History, Tempozan Ferris Wheel, HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel, Tsutenkaku Tower, Japan Folk Art Museum, Kishiwada Danjiri Kaikan, The Entrepreneurial Museum of Challenge and Innovation and the Yuki Museum of Art.

There are also reductions on travel on the Captain Line ferry between USJ and Osaka Aquarium, the Tombori River Cruise, the Naniwa Tanken Cruise with a Rakugo Performer (complimentary soft drink).

Please check the full list where you can get benefits!

The Pass is not linked to your personal information, so it will not be returned to you.

You can have your Kansai Thru Pass card delivered to your home before your departure, or directly in Japan (for example at your hotel). Your pass will be sent at the same time as your rail pass or other passes you are booking, if applicable.

You can also come and collect your Kansai Thru Pass directly in one of our agencies.

The Kansai Thru Pass can be purchased before your trip to Japan, without any impact on their use.

The Kansai Thru Pass is not valid on JR lines, but you can purchase a ticket or use Suica to board a train.

For more information about Suica, please refer to this page.

If you are traveling for more than 3 days, you may purchase more than one pass. You can purchase up to 5 at a time.

The pass is not valid on all JR operated trains (Limited Express and Shinkansen).

Separate fare will be required for journeys outside the zone. Please inquire with the station staff.

If you want to know about all other transportation including in the pass, please check the area map.

While you can use Kansai Thru Pass for non JR transportation, Kansai Area Pass and Kansai Wide Area Pass are valid only for JR lines.

If you want to go to Biwa lake, Hikone, Nagahama, and Kobe-Himeji, we recommend that you would like to buy a Kansai area pass. (You can choose from 1-4 days)

If you want to go to Kinosaki-Onsen, Tottori, Okayama and Takamatsu. We recommend that you would like to buy Kansai Wide Area Pass.(5 days)

For any other purposes, we recommend you would use Kansai Thru Pass.

The Kansai Thru Pass allows you to use the classic route to Koya San:

1- Train from Osaka (Namba or Shin-Imamiya station) to Gokurakubashi: local trains (with a change at Hashimoto), and direct Rapid-ExpressGokurakubashi trains (1h35 journey time) are accessible at no extra charge with the Kansai Thru Pass. On the other hand, the Koya Toll Limited Express-Gokurakubashi trains (1h20 journey time) are accessible with the Kansai Thru Pass but with a supplement of ¥790 payable at the station or on the train. Timetable below*.

2- Cable car between Gokurakubashi and Koya San station (5 minutes): accessible without supplement with your Kansai Thru Pass.

3- Bus from Koya San station to Koya San village (15 to 20 minutes, with several stops in Koya San village): accessible at no extra charge with your Koya San Pass. Link to the Koya San bus page.

The Koya San World Heritage Pass also allows you to make this journey, with almost the same reductions as the Kansai Thru Pass. However, the Kansai Thru Pass allows you to travel to many other areas in the Kansai region (Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, etc.), unlike the Koya San World Heritage Pass. What's more, the Kansai Thru Pass can be used directly, unlike the Koya San Pass which has to be exchanged at the station before use.

For all these reasons, Japan Experience recommends the Kansai Thru Pass for travel to and from Koya San.

*Timetable between Osaka Namba (or Shin-Imamiya = Namba + 2 minutes) and Gokurakubashi (before taking the cable car to KoyaSan):
