Do I need to book on the Shinkansen ?

If you are not catching your Shinkansen during peak hours (between 7 am and 9 am and 6 pm-8 pm), and outside of national holidays, you do not need to book your seat.

In fact, the Shinkansens run very frequently (every 30 min), in particular on the Tokaido line, between Tokyo and Kyoto.

What is the advantage of the Green Pass ?

The "Green Pass" entitles you to travel in the "Green Car", the equivalent of our 1st class, on all Shinkansens and certain rapid lines. Although it is seldom used by foreign travellers, the JR Green Pass is an even better deal than the JR Ordinary Pass.

Green Car access gives you access to more space and entitles you to a heated towel (oshibori) and a drink.
This pass is a good idea if you plan to travel across Japan by train during the festive periods in Japan (April, August and November).
