house Toho Bijin

150-Year-Old Machiya

Description

Toho Bijin house in Kanazawa was originally built 150 years ago in the late Edo period (1603-1868). Along with traditional architecture, the house also has local antiques like Wajima lacquerware and Kutaniyaki pottery. Tastefully renovated, this house has a new shower, small western table and chairs, and a beautiful Japanese garden, so you can feel the Japan of old while relaxing comfortably.

The ground floor has a kitchen, shower, living room, Japanese garden, and a restroom. Upstairs, two serene rooms await you for a relaxing rest. The house has two comfortable futons. The stairs in the house are steep, and may not be suitable for small children or elders, although the futon can be placed on the ground floor as well.

The property is located right across the river from downtown Kanazawa, with hundreds of restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. The Nishi Chaya District, one of the three geisha districts in Kanazawa, it’s just down the road, perfect for a stroll while listening to the wafting sounds of the shamisen. The ninja temple and samurai districts are also a short walk away, and the famous Kenroku-en garden and Kanazawa castle are easily accessible. Directly across from the house is a famous local shrine that holds a giant zelkova tree said to be over one thousand years old.

Rent your own traditional machiya, and experience a truly relaxing time in Kanazawa. We look forward to having you.

We had the best rental experince from Valentine and Chris. Cannot imagine how hospitable and helpful they are! We believe Valentine has a great talent to introduce the city:) we changed our flight and stayed for one more day, and it turned out to be the best decision- we had great tour in the city! We experienced sunshine, rain, snow, and amazing sunset in the famous kenroku garden and Kanazawa castle park in one day! I really recommend to stay with Japan experience’ house!

We had a fabulous Japanese experience staying 3 nights at the traditional 150 years old house! The house was exactly as hoped and Chris was fantastic with his enthusiasm, loads of information on what to do and see, and speed of answering all our demand including helping booking few restaurants. The house is on a quiet street, minutes walking to the action and sites. We would recommend to anyone and come back again anytime. Thank you again Chris for your speed in supporting our needs/demand and overall experience for our short stay.

Really enjoyed our stay. The house & facilities were great. Really appreciated the uniqueness of the very old house from the late Edo period which had been sensitively maintainer and renovated. Very comfortable and and beautiful. Highly recommended.

Had a wonderful stay in this utterly charming and relaxing 'machiya' style townhouse. It was quintessential Kanazawa atmosphere, simultaneously old yet pristine. Certain parts had been updated (brand new shower area installed just before our stay) but you can still see the wood structures underlying the whole house. It was so easy to relax on the tatami mats and just listen to the sound of the water dripping in the small garden's water fixture. There's wifi in the house but no TV or Radio. We thought this was perfect for this style of house and made for a truly quiet and relaxing time that let us appreciate the history and nature of the space we were living in. When sleeping upstairs we did notice that a nearby streetlight was bright enough to get in even through the drawn blinds a bit. My husband didn't notice at all but I'm a bit more sensitive to that sort of thing. We mentioned it to Chris and he said he'd look into it, so that was nice to be heard. Location was fantastic, less than a 10-minute walk across the bridge to the endless choice of restaurants in Katamachi (and beyond), and it's off the main streets so that the only sounds you hear are the occasional brief murmurs of a conversation as someone strolls by. Our host, Chris, was cheerful and knowledgeable, giving us the lay of the house and some local dining/sightseeing tips before leaving us to our own devices for the rest of our stay (though he made sure we knew that we could contact him with any questions). In all, we could heartily recommend this location and host to anyone coming to visit Kanazawa. The cost was a tad more than we might have been totally comfortable with (at least after factoring in Cleaning & Service fees) but on the other hand, it's a clean, beautiful taste of a Japan that's becoming more rare by the day.
