When you say Japan, most people think of Tokyo and Kyoto, but it would be very unfortunate to limit yourself to only the main island of Honshu. Hokkaido, the most northerly island of the archipelago is a beautiful place. Nature, relaxation, sport... so much awaits you on this 14-day island trip.

SAPPORO


The capital of Hokkaido, Sapporo, is a modern city that's very easy to navigate thanks to its four subway lines and grid plan

In the heart of the city, stroll through Odori park and see the famous Tokeidai clock, or admire the view over Sapporo from the top of the TV tower.

As for culture, study the Ainu civilization at the Ainu Museum, or discover the sculptures of Sapporo Art Park.

For beer lovers, you can spend a few hours at the Sapporo Beer Museum.

Behind the thick forest of Maruyamakoen park lies Hokkaido shrine, dedicated to four kami, one of which is the soul of the emperor Meiji.

In the evening you can enjoy some culinary specialties of the region in the many restaurants and bars in the Susukino district.

OTARU

A day of sightseeing in Otaru: just 30 minutes by train from Sapporo, Otaru is a quaint little town with a rich historical past, often called the Venice of Japan.

The neighborhood near the canal is a lovely place for a walk.

You can also visit the museums (Ainu culture, ceramics, literature).

WAKKANAI


Cape Soya can be reached by bus. It's about 30km from Wakkanai Railway Station, Japan's northernmost point.

Nearer Cape Noshappu, you can witness the magnificent sunset over the sea.

REBUN


Leave in the morning for the island of Rebun, nicknamed the island of flowers, 20km off the coast (journey approximately 2 hours).

Roads along the coast allow you to go on beautiful bike rides or hikes (taking between 3 to 8 hours depending on the hiking trails).

Other possible activities include fishing, or simply enjoying a meal of delicious fish.

RISHIRI


Depart in the morning for the island of Rishiri (the crossing takes 40 minutes).

You can climb Mount Rishiri, with two hiking trails from Oshidomari and Kutsugata, or simply stroll along the hiking trail to Pon-yama.

Return to Rebun.

SOUNKYO-ONSEN


In the Sounkyo area, you can stroll through a gorge that stretches for more than 8km, renowned for its waterfalls including the Dragon Waterfall (ryusei-no-taki) and the Milky Way (ginga-no-taki) .

Go hiking in Daisetsuzan National Park, or simply enjoy the magnificent view from Mount Kuro-dake (1,984m), take the cable car and the chairlift from Sounkyo-onsen.

If you opt to go hiking, you can hike to the Ohachidaira caldera in one day.

SHIRETOKO


On the Shiteroko Peninsula you will find the wildest park in Japan covering an area of 386km².
Volcanic crests, forests and animals (brown bears, minke whales, dolphins, porpoises, steller eagles and more) await.

The end of the peninsula is an ideal hiking place in summer.

You can walk in the Shiretoko-go-ko reserve, where you can see a few bears.

You can also see the 80-meter Oshin-Koshin Falls, the largest falls in Shiretoko and one of the 100 most beautiful waterfalls in Japan.

KAWAYU-ONSEN


Kawayu-onsen is a small spa town with around 20 hot springs.

From the station on the way to Kawayu-onsen you'll pass Io-zan, with its fumaroles and eggs for sale, steamed in the hot springs.

Lake Masshu-ko is one of the most beautiful in Japan. And don't miss Lake Kussharo-ko, famous for its sandy beach, heated naturally by volcanoes.

KAWAYU-ONSEN


Travel by bus to Akan Kohan (about 2h15m by bus), the largest Ainu village in Hokkaido.

Lake Akan is known for its marimo, a very rare small, spherical green algae.

A few kilometers away, tthose with the energy can climb O-Akan-dake (1,371m) which offers a beautiful view of Panketo and Penketo lakes.

Return to Kawayu-onsen and stay overnight.
